Making South WorkshopBack
Join Garry Stewart, the Artistic Director of Australian Dance Theatre (ADT), in a full day workshop that will give you a rare insight into his choreographic process. Having made over a dozen full length works for ADT as well as countless other works including commissions for major companies such as Rambert Dance Company, Royal Flanders Ballet, Sydney Dance Company and The Australian Ballet, this workshop is a valuable opportunity for anyone interested in making dance.
Making South is aimed primarily at emerging and experienced choreographers as well as experienced dancers who are beginning to develop a choreographic practice.
Garry will work with participants on unpacking his latest work for ADT titled South. This work will provide a hands-on case study for participants to analyse the processes and approaches to choreographic practice from conception through to completion. It will also provide you with an opportunity to discuss and share how ideas and concepts are materialized and directed into a cogent artistic outcome.
South is based on ideas pertaining to Antarctica focusing primarily on the Australian/British explorer Douglas Mawson’s ill-fated journey to the magnetic South Pole in 1912. This work draws on various conceptual threads such the body in states of resilience, struggle and failure, the topography of Antarctica, the construct of Antarctica in the cultural imagination and the relationship between humans and nature in the age of the Anthropocene.
Garry will be assisted by ADT’s Associate Artistic Director Sarah Jayne Howard.
