Garry Stewart residency in tanzmainz, GermanyThursday, May 5, 2016
In his first work for a German ensemble, Artistic Director Garry Stewart is currently undertaking a residency in Europe, working on the his upcoming piece Objekt. Created in collaboration with Germany’s tanzmainz dance company, Objekt will have its Australian premiere at Adelaide College of the Arts in October. Assisting Garry during creative development is ADT dancer Kimball Wong.
Exploring the objectification of humans and how this allows one group to measure, corral, and subjugate another, Objekt is symbolic of today’s socio-political reality. tanzmainz is the contemporary dance company of Staatstheater Mainz, lead by its Director Honne Dohrmann.
Objekt will be the first time ADT has collaborated with an international dance company and the work will be unveiled in Germany in June. Two dancers from tanzmainz will then come to Australia to work with ADT for the Australian premiere.
This cultural exchange contributes to new outcomes in dance for Australian audiences as ADT combines its unique brand of dance with the artistic style and culture of a German dance company.
This residency is also an important opportunity to further Kimball Wong’s career development as a dancer through working with an international company. He will also benefit from the new training as a rehearsal director and assistant to a choreographer/director through the creative development process.
The company look forward to presenting the Australian premiere of Objekt in October.
