The Company

Under the directorship of Garry Stewart, Australian Dance Theatre creates dance that is an intelligent progression of the art form engaging audiences the world over.

Australian Dance Theatre is Australia’s pre-eminent contemporary dance company and the longest running in the country. For over 50 years Australian Dance Theatre has pioneered new work that has contributed to defining dance in this region.

Some of the most laudable names in Australian dance have been part of the company’s evolution. For the past 18 years, under the artistic direction of Garry Stewart, Australian Dance Theatre has engaged in unique collaborations with artists from a wide variety of fields. With the dancers of the company, Garry Stewart has developed a distinctive movement vocabulary that underpins the company’s unique identity.

Garry Stewart guest judge at the International Competition for Choreographers

In June Artistic Director Garry Stewart was a guest judge for the Hanover Ballet Society’s annual International Competition for Choreographers, supported by the Tanja Liedtke Foundation.

Tanja Liedtke was a former dancer with ADT in the late 90s and early 2000s, performing in various works for the company.

Botis Seva a London based choreographer,  won both the jury prize and the audience award for his piece 60 Sec. Rooted in hip hop, Seva and his company Far From the Norm take an active role in education and outreach projects, working with institutions like Sadler’s Wells.

Botis wins €6,000 for his first place finish, as well as a three-week scholarship to study at ADT, made possible through funding from the Tanja Liedtke Foundation.

Each year, the Hannover competition receives approximately 160 applications from artists in over 45 different countries.
