Gabrielle Nankivell 'Split Second Heroes' Studio ShowingThursday, October 27, 2016
The company were thrilled to welcome former ADT dancer and celebrated independent choreographer Gabrielle Nankivell into the ADT studios for a week-long residency. Together with the ADT dancers and other independents in the sector she is further developing her piece Split Second Heroes in a research lab setting.
Split Second Heroes is a technicolour action-adventure starring everyone’s favourite anti-heroes – White, Black and Grey. The piece is an endearingly eccentric, superbly physical, high-tech take on the age-old quest for self-discovery.
Gabrielle shares insight into her residency:
“My motivation for conducting the Split Second Heroes research lab is twofold. On one hand it creates an open environment in which to break open, analyse and mess with the concepts, characters and material we have developed in previous stages of the project. On the other, it facilitates the development of meaningful working relationships through practice between South Australian mid-career artists. The situation in the room is akin to a giant brainstorm or think tank played out through durational improvisations, idea mapping and animated conversation. Through the structure of the work we are examining methodology in practice and engaging in critical dialogue. We are also feasting on the huge amount of energy and personality in the room while laughing a lot! It’s a great environment and I hope that getting to know each other ‘on the floor’ in a creative situation might pave the way for some new working relationships between those involved in the future.
The lab brings together the Split Second Heroes team (Gabrielle Nankivell, Luke Smiles, Vincent Crowley, Kialea Nadine Williams), four independent SA dance artists and ADT’s core dancers. This project is supported by Arts South Australia through the Contemporary Dance Sector Investment grant 2016″
