Be Your Self Open Rehearsal for Schools dates announced
Thursday, April 23, 2015To coincide with the national Australian tour of Garry Stewart’s Be Your Self, Australian Dance Theatre are hosting two open rehearsals for schools on Wednesday 6th & Wednesday 13th of May.
These rehearsals are an opportunity for students to go behind the scenes and observe the creative process of Australian Dance Theatre. The company thoroughly enjoy these opportunities to engage with the community.
Students will arrive during the Australian Dance Theatre dancers’ daily technique class and the company’s Associate Artistic Director Elizabeth Old will give a short explanation about the dancers’ training and rehearsal process.
Students will then observe 45-minutes of rehearsal, which may involve a choreographic process, or a dance work being rehearsed for performance. At the end of the session students will be given an opportunity to meet the dancers and ask questions.
Garry Stewart’s Be Your Self steps through the conventions we use to construct a singular and consistent notion of ‘I’. In an analysis of selfhood, Stewart situates the body at the centre of his inquiry. In Be Your Self the Australian Dance Theatre dancers are transformed into erupting, powerful, creative entities. Australian Dance Theatre provide education notes as a resource for teachers, including details behind the production of a performance, the theories and research behind Be Your Self as well as student activities and questions. These are available for purchase here.
