AUSTRALIAN DANCE THEATRE PREMIERES MULTIVERSE IN ADELAIDEWednesday, March 5, 2014
Australian Dance Theatre will again push new boundaries this July with the world premiere of Garry Stewart’s Multiverse where visually stunning 3D graphics share the stage with three phenomenal dancers to create one of the first 3D works by a national Australian dance company.
Conceived, directed and choreographed by Garry Stewart, the one-hour production has been created following his role as “Thinker in Residence” at Deakin University’s Motion.Lab, working with computer animators and Australian Dance Theatre dancers to blend choreography with 3D effects.
As the first ever artist to undertake a “Thinker in Residence” program at Deakin University, he said that the development has been rewarding, challenging and incredibly stimulating.
“The work is based on ideas from theoretical physics and because this is an invisible world to us it is a perfect vehicle to explore a visualisation of notions such as parallel dimensions, multiple universes, string theory and black holes: ideas that are at the centre of current thinking into how we understand the universe,” Stewart said.
To understand these difficult and complex concepts Garry Stewart consulted with Andrew Melatos, the Associate Professor from the Physics Department at Melbourne University.
“Andrew’s advice was critical in the creation of the breathtaking 3D effects, which will be joined by a video tracking feature by Matt Gingold allowing an additional layer of projection to be seen on the dancers bodies whilst they are moving – stunning technology,” Stewart said.
This work will be supported by a score created by Brendan Woithe (KLANG), Sound Composer for past works such as Be Your Self and Collision Course and the audience will be taken on a new journey not only by the work itself, but by viewing the work with 3D glasses.
Lighting will be created by renowned lighting designer Damien Cooper who has worked with companies such as Australian Ballet, Bangarra, Opera Australia as well as creating stunning designs for Australian Dance Theatre productions Birbrain and Be Your Self.
“Our dancers will be dressed in costumes designed by the very talented Adelaide fashion designer Catherine Ziersch who produced the beautiful costumes last year for Nought. She is working with an experimental light-emitting fabric to further enhance and support the graphics on stage,” said Stewart.
An education component including forums and open rehearsals will also run in the lead up to and during the season.
To celebrate the world premiere of Multiverse, an exhibition of screen based works by Garry Stewart and Australian Dance Theatre will be staged at the Artspace Gallery, Adelaide Festival Centre from 2nd July – 24th August. The exhibition offers audiences the opportunity to experience the innovation of Australian Dance Theatre across dance, visual arts and screen.
Australian Dance Theatre in association with Adelaide Festival Centre will premiere Mutliverse 9-12 July, 2014 at the Space Theatre. Tickets are on sale now.
