The Company

Under the directorship of Garry Stewart, Australian Dance Theatre creates dance that is an intelligent progression of the art form engaging audiences the world over.

Australian Dance Theatre is Australia’s pre-eminent contemporary dance company and the longest running in the country. For over 50 years Australian Dance Theatre has pioneered new work that has contributed to defining dance in this region.

Some of the most laudable names in Australian dance have been part of the company’s evolution. For the past 18 years, under the artistic direction of Garry Stewart, Australian Dance Theatre has engaged in unique collaborations with artists from a wide variety of fields. With the dancers of the company, Garry Stewart has developed a distinctive movement vocabulary that underpins the company’s unique identity.

Australian Dance Theatre nominated for four Helpmann Awards

In March 2016 the company presented the World Premiere of its latest work Habitus, as part of the prestigious Adelaide Festival of Arts. The work was well received by audiences and media, including sold out performances.

The company were pleased to have such a successful premiere season, and are thrilled to be nominated for four awards in the 2016 Helpmann Awards.

We are honoured to nominated alongside some incredible Australian organisations and artists such as Bangarra Dance Theatre, Sydney Dance Company, The Australian Ballet, Dancenorth, Performing Lines and The Farm.

Our nominations are:

Best Female Dancer in a Dance or Physical Theatre Work – Lonii Garnons Williams – Habitus

Best Male Dancer in a Dance or Physical Theatre Work – Kimball Wong- Habitus

Best Ballet or Dance Work – Australian Dance Theatre – Habitus

Best Choreography in a Dance or Physical Theatre Work – Garry Stewart & Larissa McGowan – Habitus
