ADT's improvisation week with Andrew Morrish

Thursday, May 5, 2016

In April 2016, ADT invited established and mid career dance artists for a week of improvisation at its studios.

This week provided an opportunity to join ADT company dancers in studying performance improvisation technique with the Grand Master of Performance Improvisation, Andrew Morrish.

Andrew began performance improvisational work with Al Wunder’s ‘Theatre of the Ordinary’ in Melbourne in 1982. In 1987 he co-founded the improvisational movement theatre duet “Trotman and Morrish” with Peter Trotman. Together they performed in various festivals in Australia and the United States. In 2000 Andrew moved to Sydney and based his teaching and solo performance practice at Omeo Dance Studio.

In 2002 he relocated to Europe and now teaches and performs regularly in Australia, France, The Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, Norway, Sweden, Estonia and the United Kingdom. In 2016 he was awarded the Dance Fellowship of the Australia Council of the Arts (2016-2017).

The aim of these closely guided sessions were to invest in choreographic practice and facilitate choreographic development.
The week ended with a closed improvisation performance by the dance artists involved, providing an opportunity for independent dancers and the dancers of ADT to work together in a rare exchange of skills and knowledge.

We thank Andrew for sharing his vast store of knowledge and experience.
