The Company

Under the directorship of Garry Stewart, Australian Dance Theatre creates dance that is an intelligent progression of the art form engaging audiences the world over.

Australian Dance Theatre is Australia’s pre-eminent contemporary dance company and the longest running in the country. For over 50 years Australian Dance Theatre has pioneered new work that has contributed to defining dance in this region.

Some of the most laudable names in Australian dance have been part of the company’s evolution. For the past 20 years, under the artistic direction of Garry Stewart, Australian Dance Theatre has engaged in unique collaborations with artists from a wide variety of fields. With the dancers of the company, Garry Stewart has developed a distinctive movement vocabulary that underpins the company’s unique identity.

A look back on 2018

As we reflect on what has been a huge and exciting year for the company, we sincerely thank all our valued audiences, sponsors and supporters for ensuring that we are able to continue to create and perform new work, play a leading role as a cultural ambassador for Australia, and provide opportunities for the future generation of dancers and dance makers. Thank you for joining us in 2018.  

  • After 15 years, we moved from our studios in Hawthorn to our new home – The Odeon,in Norwood and began extensive renovations with the support of our supporting partner Enoki. We also began work on removing the seating and replacing with a retractable system
  • We bid farewell to our Associate Artistic Director of over ten years, Elizabeth Old and welcomed our new Associate Artistic Director, Sarah-Jayne Howard
  • We welcomed a new dancer to the company, Rowan Rossi
  • After holding auditions, we welcomed the 2019 Youth Ensemble
  • We hosted winners of the Ballet Gesellschaft International Choreographic Competition in Hanover, Rudi Cole & Julia Robert. Founding co-artistic directors of Humanhood, they spent three weeks with us in the studios, generously supported by the Tanja Liedtke Foundation
  • We began the first development of South – a new work by Garry Stewart 
  • We performed an excerpt of The Beginning of Nature at the Adelaide Festival Centre’s Walk of Fame Gala to celebrate the newly re-opened Festival Theatre as well as their extensive internal and external renovations, including a Walk of Fame surrounding the parameter of the Centre
  • Artistic Director Garry Stewart as well as former Artistic Directors Leigh Warren, Meryl Tankard and Founding Artistic Director Elizabeth Cameron Dalman OAM received a star on the Adelaide Festival Centre Walk of Fame
  • We presented the European Premiere season of The Beginning of Nature at the DeLaMar Theatre in Amsterdam, Netherlands
  • We performed Tanja Liedkte’s construct at Theater Heidelberg as part of Tanzbiennale Heidelberg. This was the first-time construct had been performed in Tanja’s home country.
  • The ADT dancers featured in the work of photographer Tamara Dean in her exhibition In Our Nature for the 2018 Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art
  • We welcomed a new partner to the ADT family, Henschke
  • We hosted the official opening of The Odeon,revealing our newly renovated foyer (including the Henschke Wine Bar), main theatre, rehearsal studio (the Tanja Liedtke Studio), break-out space, meeting room, treatment room and offices
  • As part of our Odeon opening weekend, we hosted an open day for the public to participate in free dance classes, see an exclusive showing of South by Garry Stewart and a performance by our Youth Ensemble as well as tours of the new home
  • As part of our Artist Residency program (formally known as Enhancement) we welcomed Lewis Major to the studios as he developed his new work Epilogue, which has since toured to 22 cities throughout Europe and features in the Adelaide Fringe program 2019
  • ADT dancers Zoë Duwnoodie and Matte Roffe choreographed and performed solos as part of UKARIA’s flagship weekend event, UKARIA 24. Curated by German-French cellist Nicolas Altstaedt, their works were performed with Nicolas live on stage to Bach’s immortal Cello Suites
  • We announced an exciting a unique partnership with one of the world’s best-known names in luxury international travel, Cunard Cruise Lines.
  • As part of the ADT ICC, we conducted the Making South workshop, unpacking Garry Stewart’s latest work, South
  • We held our annual Secondment Week for tertiary dance students from across the country
  • The company headed off on the Australian national tour of The Beginning of Nature, performing in Canberra, Dubbo, Wollongong, Wyong, Renmark, Hobart, Alice Springs, Mandurah and Adelaide
  • Over 23,000 people attended our inaugural Adelaide Dance Festival in July. Across two weeks the Festival featured a program of world-class performances, workshops, installations, discussions and masterclasses
  • Our Youth Ensemble performed at the Art Gallery of South Australia’s Neo Nights program twice, as well as at our partner Adelaide Airport’s Retailer Awards, hosted at The Odeon
  • We commenced the first development of North with renowned Norwegian choreographer, Ina Christel Johannessen
  • As part of the ADT ICC, we conducted the Making North workshop, giving participants a rare insight into the choreographic methods of Ina Christel Johannessen
  • We hosted our annual Rough Draft event, presenting new works-in-development by twelve independent dancers and artists
  • We performed at new partner, Henschke’s 150thanniversary celebrations
  • We farewelled Shaun Comerford after almost 3 years with the company and appointed Eira Swaine as our new Executive Director
  • We shot a new short-film coming in 2019 by Garry Stewart and renowned director and cinematographer, Cordelia Beresford titled The Circadian Cycle
  • As part of our Artist Residency program (formally known as Enhancement) we welcomed Erin Fowler to the studiosas he developed her new work FEMMES to be premiered in Adelaide Fringe 2019
  • We headed off on a seven-week European tour of The Beginning of Nature throughout Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium
  • Over the year we delivered 26 workshops to 597 students and hosted 54 students into our rehearsals as part of our Learning Program
