The Company

Under the directorship of Garry Stewart, Australian Dance Theatre creates dance that is an intelligent progression of the art form engaging audiences the world over.

Australian Dance Theatre is Australia’s pre-eminent contemporary dance company and the longest running in the country. For over 50 years Australian Dance Theatre has pioneered new work that has contributed to defining dance in this region.

Some of the most laudable names in Australian dance have been part of the company’s evolution. For the past 20 years, under the artistic direction of Garry Stewart, Australian Dance Theatre has engaged in unique collaborations with artists from a wide variety of fields. With the dancers of the company, Garry Stewart has developed a distinctive movement vocabulary that underpins the company’s unique identity.

General information



Entry into the Australian Dance Theatre’s Youth Ensemble is by audition only. Once accepted to register participants must be enrolled & paid in the Term they are participating in before the first class of Term.

To enrol, please request a registration form and return it to Australian Dance Theatre, via post, email or fax. Payment of fees can be made directly to Australian Dance Theatre. Payment can also be done online.

Term dates

Rehearsals for the Youth Ensemble are held during South Australian school terms only, over 10-weeks.

Conditions of Enrolment

Australian Dance Theatre School reserves the right to make amendments to its classes without prior notice or to cancel a class.

Australian Dance Theatre School reserves the right to refuse an enrolment as permitted by law or to request a participant to leave a class if they are disruptive, late or have not paid, or arranged payment for, their term fees.

Australian Dance Theatre School reserves the right to refuse an enrolment if a student does not fulfil the age or experience requirements for the classes.

Students must be aged 14-20 years as of 1 February 2018. Students are also required to have at least three- years dance experience to participate in the classes.

Australian Dance Theatre provides supervision of the students during classes on Thursdays 4.30pm – 7.00pm only. Parents/guardians can wait for their children in The Odeon foyer during class times. The Odeon is a non-smoking venue.

Australian Dance Theatre does not allow any person to watch class from inside the studio due to safety and security reasons. Any person inside the studio at the time of a class must be participating in that class. Sometimes there may be an in-class showing where parents & family members will be invited to come and watch what the students have been learning, parents will be advised of this in advance.


All students will receive a confirmation of their enrolment to the School prior to the beginning of Term. It is the parent/guardian’s responsibility to contact Australian Dance Theatre School if they do not receive the confirmation.


Photography & videography

Australian Dance Theatre may take and use photographs and videos of participants for promotional and archival purposes only. All material recorded during any program is the copyright of Australian Dance Theatre. Participants can elect to not have their photo or video used by Australian Dance Theatre by emailing or phoning 08- 83737733.

Transportation & parking

There are many bus services that travel to Norwood. Visit Adelaide Metro for further information. Parking is available on and around the surrounding streets of The Odeon. Pay attention to the marked signage as some parks have a one or two hour time limit.


Non-restrictive dance/active wear is the recommended dress for students. For most classes they will need to be barefoot. There may be some classes that require students to wear sneakers, students are asked to bring sneakers with them to each class and the teacher will advise when they are required to wear them.


Please bring a drink bottle to classes; Australian Dance Theatre has a filtered water tap where you can refill your drink bottle.

Mobile phones

All mobile phones must be switched to silent prior to the commencement of class. If students have special circumstances please discuss with the instructor prior to class.

Lost property

Students must take all their valuables in to the studio with them and remember to collect all of their belongings after class. Australian Dance Theatre cannot take responsibility for anything left behind in the studio, foyer or any other part of the building. To check on any lost property please contact Australian Dance Theatre during business hours on 08-83737733.

Additional information

Each class includes a warm up and cool down session. Students must be on time for class and no student will be allowed in to any class 20 minutes after the class has commenced. If students wish to arrive 15 minutes early to stretch before class they are welcome to come inside into the rehearsal studio.
